Katmai; formed at the eruption of Katmai in June 1912 when the valley--17 m. long by 4 m. wide--was covered by a flow of incandescent sand; later (1915), when discovered by an expedition of the National Geographic Society, its floor was found to have not 10,000, but actually millions of steam jets, large and small (largest 150 ft. in diameter), some of which had a temperature as high as 1200⁰F.)
