- Brandt, August Heinrich von; born Aug. 2, 1789 in Lanken bei Schneidemühl; died Jan. 23, 1868, Berlin; Prussian general and military writer; studied law in Königsberg; fought with the Weichsellegion 1808 in Spain and 1812 in Russia; raised to Polish nobility 1810, Prussian nobility 1819; became Prussian officer 1814/15 and 1830 assigned to the General Staff; entrusted with various missions, in consequence of his quick suppression of the Polish uprising in 1848, elected to the Frankfurt parliament; 1849 commandant of Poznan (until 1857); elected several times to the House of Deputies, participating in the ongoing debates about military reorganization; as author multi-facetted in dealing with tactical and military-political questions; Dr. Phil h.c.
