Sunday [December 15, 2024], San Francisco; cause: idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis; born Zakir Hussain Qureshi; eldest son of Ravi Shankar's longtime tabla drummer, Alla Rakha Qureshi, and Bavi Begum; his mother changed his surname to Hussain a few days after he was born on the advice of a saint; officially began to study Indian classical music with his father at age 7, before school, along with reciting the Quran at a madrasa and singing hymns at a Roman Catholic church; made his United States debut at 18, playing with Ravi Shankar at the Fillmore East in New York in 1970, when his father was ill, and continuing with Shankar on tour; studied and taught ethnomusicology at the University of Washington, where he earned a Ph.D.; moved to Northern California to teach at the Ali Akbar College of Music in San Rafael, where he led the Tal Vadya Rhythm Band; Mickey Hart, the Grateful Dead drummer, joined the group in 1975, and it was renamed the Diga Rhythm Band; its debut album, "Diga" (1976), featured the Dead's Jerry Garcia as guest guitarist; first of many collaborations with Mickey Hart; married Antonia Minnecola, a dancer in the Indian classical style Kathak, in 1978; she was also his manager; in 1991 he started Moment Records to release his classical and contemporary collaborations; awarded the 2022 Kyoto Prize, a Japanese lifetime achievement award in the arts and sciences; in 1973 he had formed the group Shakti with English jazz guitarist John McLaughlin, Indian violinist L. Shankar, and Indian percussionist T.H. Vinayakram; McLaughlin, Hussain and three other Indian musicians regrouped as Shakti to record the 2023 album "This Moment", which won a Grammy Award this year (2024) for best global music album; also shared two other Grammys this year, for global music performance and contemporary instrumental album, for "As We Speak", a collaboration by him and banjo player Béla Fleck, bassist Edgar Meyer, and Indian bansuri (bamboo flute) player Rakesh Chaurasia) ( (New York Times, December 15, 2024, accessed via WWW, December 16, 2024) )
