- Dictionary of African Biography, accessed March 14, 2015, via Oxford African American Studies Center database:(Murad, Layla; popular singer; born 17 February 1918 in Cairo, Egypt; sang one of her original pieces in the movie "The Victims" (1932); Muhammad Abd al-Wahhab, the leading male singer of his generation and a dominant figure in the cinema business, cast her alongside him in his third film, "Long Live Love" (1938); made twenty-seven films (1938-1955); next five films for Togo Mizrahi, a pioneer of the industry who turned her into a superstar; played in "The Flirtation of Girls" (1949), an iconic film from the post-World War II boom in production; publicly converted to Islam; "Layla, Daughter of Nobility" (1954), the best of her late films and reminiscent of her early work; made only two more films; retired in 1955; "I Ask about You" was judged best song by a panel of critics (1954); the Syrian government banned her music from state radio and disallowed screening of her films (until 1958); recorded some 1,200 songs over her career, many of them composed by the leading musicians of the day; died 21 November 1995 in Cairo, Egypt)
