  • Dictionary of African Biography, accessed March 29, 2015, via Oxford African American Studies Center database:(Nyagumbo, Maurice; nationalist, government official, politician; born 12 December 1924, Nyagundi, Zimbabwe; received primary education at St. Faith Anglican Mission, St. Augustine's Penhalonga; was involved in anticolonial politics as a member of the Communist Party and the South Africa's African National Congress, a Zimbabwean secret association, an African nationalist movement in Zimbabwe, City Youth League (1955), was a member of the first African nationalist party in Zimbabwe, Southern Rhodesia African National Congress (SRANC); Rhodesian authorities banned the party in 1959 and imprisoned leaders; he was released in 1963, joined ZANU and was elected to the central committee (1964); was imprisoned at Salisbury Prison, Que Que (1967-1973); released in 1974; arrested 3 April, 1975, and sentenced to 15 years, started writing his autobiography, With the People: An Autobiography from the Zimbabwean Struggle, first published in 1980; was released out of prison in 1979; negotiated transition from colonial Rhodesia to independent Zimbabwe (April 1980); was elected to the House of Assembly; was appointed Minister of Mines in Zimbabwe; was a Minister of Political Affairs until 1988; became Senior Minister of State, resigned on 13 April, 1989, because of a corruption scandal, poisoned himself, died 20 April 1989)
