Chase led most Liberty abolitionists into the Free-Soil Party (1848); editor for National Era, national antislavery newspaper published in Washington, D.C. (1847-1859); made his Washington home the center of antislavery social life, and became an antislavery lobbyist in Congress; persuaded Whig and Democratic opponents of the Kansas-Nebraska Act bill to form a common caucus, which contributed to the formation of the Republican Party (1854); died 05 June 1859 at sea)
