He earned his B.A. degree at the University of Mississippi, his M.A. at the University of Kentucky, and his Ph.D. at Duke University. Longtime head of the Department of History at the University of Kentucky, he has served as Distinguished Visiting Professor at Eastern Kentucky University. Clark has been active in numerous state and national historical societies and historical projects. Among his many articles and books are "A History of Kentucky"; "Kentucky, Land of Contrast"; "Frontier America"; "Pills, Petticoats, and Plows"; and "Indiana University".)
