This article attempts to gain a broader understanding of the existentialist and transcendental features attributed to domestic routine in texts written by women/mothers in the weeks following the October 7th massacre in Israel. Although the domestic sphere and domestic practices have been regarded in feminist-critical theory as a zone of surrender with immanent features, they are presented in the texts studied as embodying an existential struggle to transcend the nullifying chaos, a transition amid existential anxiety and the collapse of certainty, and the re-creation of a protected existence. This article turns to existentialist philosophy that has dealt, albeit implicitly or indirectly, with the ontological meaning of the home and domestic routine in order to examine whether insights from this philosophy shed light on the meaning of the features found. The study findings may deepen our understanding of the experiences and processes that mothers in Israel have undergone and experienced following the October 7th atrocities. |
