The purpose of the present article was to gain an in-depth understanding of the identity formation experience of beginning teachers, members of Generation Y, who teach Generation Alpha students in elementary schools, from the point of view of the teachers. Seventy-five Israeli elementary school teachers in their first year of teaching participated in this qualitative study. The findings revealed that in forming their professional identity, the teachers needed a structured integration process in school and a supportive community that provides feedback and shows appreciation for their work, listens to them, and is prepared to change. The teachers indicated that they preferred to bring about change in the schools, and if they couldn’t, they would want to quit. The findings reinforce those of previous studies that investigated the employment characteristics of Generation Y. They indicated a need to form a school community for professional, social, and emotional support for Generation Y teachers joining the education system to provide them with a sense of understanding the school organization. Under optimal working conditions, Generation Y teachers can become significant advocates of moral values and equal opportunities, can maximize the potential of each student and of the classroom, and can make school relevant. |
