Many research studies have examined the relationship between participation in physical activity and academic achievement. The aim of the present study was to examine the relationships between gender and participation in different levels of physical activity (competitive sport, non-competitive sport, and non-participation in any physical activity) and academic achievement of high school students. Four hundred and ninety-one high school students in three comparison groups, divided as follows, participated in the study: 170 students (107 males and 63 females) were in the competitive sport group 185 students (79 males and 106 females) were members of the non-competitive sport group and 136 students (32 males and 104 females) made up the non-participation in any physical activity group. Results of the research indicate significant group membership x gender interactions. The most notable finding indicates that female students who participated in competitive sport achieved the highest level of academic achievement, whereas their male counterparts who participated in competitive sport achieved the lowest level of academic achievement. It appears that the above results can be explained by the social perception that participation in competitive sport is significantly more legitimate for male high school students than for their female counterparts. |
