תקציר/הערה Stamps are clearly a communicative medium: They are an inexpensive and common tool which carries a message, they are used for mass distribution, and their design is approachable and captivating. Nevertheless stamps are usually seen as decorative, colorful artifacts, and so far have attracted little research attention, particularly among media researchers. As stamps are official state objects, issued solely by governments, their analysis can shed light on the cultural, sociological, and political aspects of their time, as well as on its artistic and aesthetic values. They can help in an attempt to reconstruct the reality of their times — the way the society that issues them grasps its past, and can even open a window to its financial situation and technological capacities. The present article is devoted to one of the more common themes in world stamps — sport. Using content analysis of all the stamps that were issued by the State of Israel since its establishment, this article seeks to learn about the status of the sport in Israel: its importance, and its representations and characteristics as reflected in stamps as a major cultural agent. The article's findings indicate that in spite of the great popularity of sport — and even, as some scholars hold, as kind of a modern religion that crosses borders and cultures, sports have low visibility in Israeli stamps. Out of 2,213 stamps that were issued in Israel from the state's establishment in 1948 to the end of the year 2012, only 96 stamps (4.3%) were devoted to sport.
