National places and monuments play an important part in creating and designing a national identity, on bot the domestic and international level. National football stadiums are also laden with the social and political aspects of sport, and receive a great amount of attention due to the large number of visitors and broadened media exposure. Nonetheless, a significant number of countries, usually with a rich heritage of sport excellency such as the USA, Italy, and Spain, have chosen the alternative of hosting national competitions in various stadiums throughout the country. This decision is based on the presence or absence of three factors: the need for a sport facility to be used as a narrative tool, the political need for strengthening local and national identity, and the ability of a single place to appropriately represent the culture of the country and its various social groups. This paper examines these factors in the Israeli context of the national stadium in Ramat Gan, focusing on the changing importance of the national team in accordance with the modern trend of commercialization and globalization of sports, as well as the social and functional limitation of the stadium's location. Significant aspects such as sport infrastructure, sportive needs and demands, and political and geosportive consideration are discussed, and assessments and recommendations are proposed for the current issue of the identity of the new national stadium of Israel. |
