Nahmanides (R. Moses ben Nahman), the spiritual leader of Catalonian Jewry in the thirteenth century, showers his affection on Aaron throughout his commentary on the Torah. This disposition finds expression in three main ways: he stresses Aaron’s physical and spiritual perfection, even when these are not indicated by the scriptural text, and even when they run counter to explicit midreshei halakhah Aaron is included, in exceptional manner, in Nahmanides’ typological exegesis, that is devoted to the Patriarchs and Nahmanides consistently adds laudatory appellations to Aaron’s name, ones that Aaron had not been given by earlier commentators. The article offers an explanation for this singular attitude in light of the Christian exegesis of the figure of Aaron. |
