Having lost credit in Europe, the myth of a Judeo-Masonic conspiracy has found new channels for diffusion in Latin America, Asia, and the Middle East. Freemasonry has existed in the Middle East since the mid-18th century, and has been met with open hostility by local Christians. Two distinct (but converging) channels for diffusion of the conspiracy myth can be identified in the Middle East. The first is Christian (Jesuit and Maronite) authors who, from the mid-19th century on, spread the views of European proponents of the myth (e.g. Barruel, Gougenot de Mousseaux, and Chaboty). The second is Nazi propaganda, operating in the region from the 1920s on, and focusing specifically on the "Protocols of the Elders of Zion". The most influential local work was "Asl al-Masunniya" ("The Origin of Freemasonry"), by the Maronite Awad al-Huri (Beirut, 1929). According to al-Huri, Freemasonry is of Jewish origin and nature, and the Judeo-Masonic world conspiracy has existed since the first century. The present-day version of the conspiracy myth circulating in the Arab world is based on both the "Protocols" and al-Huri's text. Emphasizes that before the foundation of the State of Israel, the anti-Masonic discourse was marginal in the Middle East it was only after 1948, when local Freemasons were repressed, that the myth of a Judeo-Masonic conspiracy, with the Jews playing a leading role, gained popularity there.
