Dönme conspiracy accounts began to circulate in Turkey mainly after the collapse of the Ottoman Empire and the establishment of the Republic. Before the 1990s, these theories were the domain of right-wing and Islamist extremist groups, but since the 1990s they have extended to left-wing and Kurdish groups. Contends that the Dönmes as a community have preserved their isolationist and hence secret character, and this secrecy plays a significant role in the production and dissemination of conspiracy theories concerning them. Summarizes four interviews conducted in 2008 with members of four political parties, representing the major ideological views in Turkey: the nationalist rightist Millietçi Hareket Partisi the Islamist Saadet Partisi the liberal-conservative Adalet ve Kalkınma Partisi and the Kurdish leftist Demokratik Toplum Partisi. The interviewees were approached with the question of how their parties perceived the secrecy of the Dönme community. The representatives of the SP and MHP viewed the secret character of the Dönme community as proof of their conspiracy theories the SP representative regarded the Dönmes as aligned with Zionism. The representatives of the AKP and the DTP rejected the conspiracy theories. The AKP saw in the secrecy of the Dönmes evidence of their ongoing integration and lack of political power, and the DTP even sympathized with the Dönmes' secrecy. The fifth party, the Kemalist Cumhuriyet Halk Partisi, refused to give an interview on the topic, regarding the conspiracy theories as political pathologies unworthy of an interview.
