Discusses unpublished memoirs, here called "Book Pages", written by Miklós (Moshe) Krausz, who was head of the Palestine Office in Hungary during the war. The work describes a rescue plan which was suggested by a high-ranking officer of the Hungarian Foreign Ministry, Aladár Szegedy-Maszák. Nine days before the German occupation of Hungary, Szegedy-Maszák invited Krausz to his office and informed him that the Germans would occupy the Carpathian area, and thus its 70,000 Jews were in mortal peril he suggested a plan to evacuate them to Budapest and to organize their speedy emigration to the Land of Israel. The plan failed because of procrastinations by Jewish leaders in Budapest, as well as by representatives of the Jewish Agency in Istanbul. Examines contemporary documents and witness accounts, and concludes that the existence of Szegedy-Maszák's initiative as mentioned in Krausz's manuscript cannot be ruled out. "Book Pages" shows that the Hungarian Jewish leadership, which knew about the nature of the Nazi Final Solution at least two years before the German occupation of Hungary, and about the impending occupation nine days before, shared responsibility for the failure of rescue in Hungary.
