Discusses the role and fate of the Hungarian Jewish family of Manfred Weiss, one of the most wealthy and influential families in Budapest in the 1930s. The family had converted to Christianity, maintained extensive relations with the Horthy regime, and possessed an important industrial complex. With the German invasion, various family members sought shelter with friends. Weiss's son-in-law Ferenc Chorin was arrested by the Gestapo, interrogated, and deported to the Oberlanzendorf camp. The SS was interested in the Manfred Weiss holdings and assigned Himmler's confidant Kurt Becher to proceed to take over the property. Becher met Chorin in Oberlanzendorf in April 1944, and offered to allow him and most of his extended family to emigrate to Portugal and Switzerland in exchange for a financial transaction. The SS was to have power of procuration for 25 years, and nine family members would stay in Hungary as hostages. 36 family members left for Portugal in June 1944, and nine left for Switzerland. Although the family had to abandon their property in Hungary, they had enough money to survive abroad. In 1946 Chorin and his family emigrated to the USA.
