Argues that, contrary to the common view, the decline in the situation of Jews in 13th-century Iberia was less due to ideological religious factors than to local political and economic ones. As a result of the Reconquista, both the Church and the Crown were in need of financial resources, and it was their struggle over access to income from a royal tax or an ecclesiastical tithe on Jewish-owned property that led to a change in ecclesiastical attitudes toward Iberian Jews.
