Notes that despite the general ideology of martyrdom that permeates Hebrew chronicles of the First Crusade of 1096, traces of conflict are indicated in the actions and motivations of some of the Jews, including unheroic conduct, family conflict about how to react, and the "particular predicament of the young, " who wanted to live. There are occasional expressions of dissent in regard to martyrdom and physical resistance. The options of flight or conversion are also mentioned, although these sometimes resulted in death. Stresses that such "inconvenient" material reinforces the view that the chronicles are trustworthy and that the chroniclers may be suggesting that martyrdom did not necessarily depend on bravery or religious idealism it could have been applicable to all those who died voluntarily or even to all who were killed as Jews.
