The theme of the Holocaust, albeit in symbolic form, is present in Spielberg's film "Saving Private Ryan". The abandonment of the Jewish soldier, Mellish, killed by an SS-man, symbolizes abandonment of the Jews by the rest of the world. Contends that this episode proposes a moral justification for waging the war, since the war against Nazism was a crusade against the Holocaust. By suturing the Holocaust into the film as its moral foundation, the film participates in the "Americanization" of Holocaust memory, circumvents Vietnam as a source of traumatic memory, manufactures a redemptive national identity, and constructs an ethically usable past in the present.
