The left-wing Zionist youth movement Hashomer Hatzair underwent a profound ideological change during World War II, under the impact of wartime reality. The movement gave up the principle of "negation of the Diaspora" and drew closer to the Po'alei Zion Left and the communists. Its stance became more pro-Soviet and anti-Western socialist solidarity gained priority over Zionist unity. Despite its prewar attitude, Hashomer Hatzair participated in local political activity in the Warsaw ghetto. In early 1942, with news on the extermination of the Jews filtering into the ghetto, the movement focused on resistance, ideologically seen as joining forces with the worldwide anti-fascist struggle. This ideological shift explains the success of the Jewish communist initiative in establishing the Anti-Fascist Bloc in the Warsaw ghetto in March 1942. During the year before the Warsaw ghetto uprising, Hashomer Hatzair's concept of resistance shifted from "struggle for socialist liberation" to revenge against the Nazis and preservation of Jewish honor.
