Browning, Christopher R.. Zur Genesis der "Endlösung" eine Antwort an Martin Broszat. "Vierteljahrshefte für Zeitgeschichte" 29,1 (1981) 97-109. A revised English version appeared as "A reply to Martin Broszat regarding the origins of the Final Solution" in the "Simon Wiesenthal Center Annual" 1 (1984) 113-132. Browning agrees with Broszat’s refutation of David Irving’s claim that the Final Solution was carried out without Hitler’s approval. However, whereas Broszat argues that there was no single decision to murder the Jews, the mass murder having developed out of "a series of separate killing actions in 1941-1942", Browning believes that Hitler "ordered..., incited or solicited the preparation of an extermination plan in the summer of 1941".
