Switzerland was traditionally considered a haven for the persecuted, but ceased to be such for Jewish refugees from the Reich in 1938-39. In October 1938, Germany introduced a "J" stamped in all of the passports of Jews leaving Germany, a measure initiated by the Swiss police. Relates the history of restrictive Swiss policies regarding admission of Jewish refugees from 1919 to 1938. In 1939 Switzerland closed its border to Jewish refugees. It is true that some cantonal authorities implemented federal policy toward the refugees with a certain laxity. Documents received recently at the Yad Vashem Archives from the Municipal Archives of Basel show the reasons given by the border police of the canton when it turned back Jewish refugees from Germany. Pp. 225-234 present a sample of the documents from Basel, translated into English.
