Translation of a keynote lecture delivered in Hebrew in March 1989 at the conference "European Jewry in View of Fascism and National Socialism" (the proceedings were not published) held at Yad Vashem. Reflects on the impact of the World War I and interwar periods on Jewish history. It was that war which destroyed the faltering equilibrium between Jews and non-Jews in Europe and eventually brought about the Holocaust.
