The introduction of the shrunken head of a Polish victim of Buchenwald as evidence at the Nuremberg Trials of 1945-46 contributed to the depiction of the Holocaust as an atavistic orgy of mass savagery and lawlessness - a barbaric assault upon civilization. Another piece of evidence introduced at the trial was a 90-second film of a ghetto liquidation, called "Original German Eight-Millimeter Film of Atrocities against the Jews, " showing the brutality of the SS and their assistants. The liquidation looks like a pogrom or a revival of medieval violence. Robert H. Jackson, chief counsel for the U.S., saw the atrocities depicted in the film as acts against civilization. However, Zygmunt Bauman and others see them as acts of civilization, or results of its destructive potential. They see the Holocaust as a cool-headed enterprise employing the bureaucratic mechanisms of a modern state. The depiction of the Holocaust presented by Daniel Goldhagen has revived the image of it as an atavistic rejection of civilization.
