Contends that those who hastily dismissed and rejected Daniel Goldhagen's book "Hitler's Willing Executioners" were short-sighted. In the historiography of the last two decades, there has been a tendency toward normalization of the Holocaust. The anger engendered by Goldhagen's book derives mainly from its challenge to this new trend. Criticizes Goldhagen's conception of German antisemitism: not always was it so strong and pervasive the rise of modern antisemitism in the interwar period affected not only Germany there were many motives other than antisemitism which induced Germans to vote for Hitler. Goldhagen also neglects circumstances other than popular antisemitism that helped Hitler to pursue his anti-Jewish policies. However, in some cases Goldhagen gives a better perspective of the events and their motives than contemporary scholars - e.g. Christopher Browning, who ascribes the Nazi atrocities to wartime brutalization, or Hans Mommsen, who lays all the responsibility on those who gave the orders.
