Examining statistics on and accounts of armed attacks on Jews in the liberated areas of Poland in 1944-early 1945 and in the Polish state in 1945-46, concludes that a multiplicity of factors were responsible for these events. Most of the assaults were perpetrated by clandestine anti-government armed organizations, or isolated members only a few of them were motivated by revenge against pro-communist Jews. In some cases, attacks were impelled by antisemitism and Jews were killed indiscriminately in other cases, attackers wanted to prevent the Jews from claiming their prewar property some attacks had a purely criminal character. There is no visible correlation between the intensity of the killings of pro-communist Poles and that of Jews. Although some assaults were spontaneous and did not stem from the underground, the anti-Jewish violence came to an end after the Kielce pogrom in July 1946, because this pogrom, which attracted world attention, seemed to be detrimental to the anti-communist cause.
