תקציר/הערה Examines the reaction of the Church of England to the persecution of Jews in the Greater Reich in the crucial year 1938 - the year of the Anschluss, Sudeten crisis, and "Kristallnacht". Regarding preservation of peace in Europe as the most burning issue, the Church endorsed the British state policy of pursuing peace and good relations with Germany regardless of what was going on there, and interceded only on behalf of the refugees from Austria and the Sudetenland. The "Kristallnacht" was a watershed for the leaders of the Church of England. Most of them adopted a negative stance towards events in Germany
some tried to influence state policy using the tribune of the Parliament. The Church's main concern was refugees, whom it supported morally and materially. The Church also affected public opinion in England. The sphere in which the established Church failed was that of collective political action
it failed to recognize fully the moral demands which the political world made upon it. (From the Bibliography of the Vidal Sassoon International Center for the Study of Antisemitism - The Hebrew University of Jerusalem)
