For Polish Jews, the first half of the 18th century was marked by repression, extortion, blood libel trials ending in executions, and economic collapse. In the early Enlightenment, some members of the Polish clergy and the nobility proposed more tolerant attitudes toward the Jews. By 1770-80 the idea of reforming Jews rather than converting them was gaining ground. However, representatives of the burgher class feared Jewish competition and opposed the settlement of Jews in their towns and granting them municipal privileges. The peasants, unaffected by the Enlightenment, retained traditional hostile attitudes.
