While historians disagree whether it was philosophical rationalism or asceticism and mysticism that led Spanish Jews to mass conversions between 1391-1942, they agree that external pressures alone cannot explain the phenomenon. The polemical work "Memorial", written in 1416 by the Converso Juan el Viejo from Toledo, provides an interesting insight into the Converso mentality and the motivations for conversion.
