Traces conflicting interpretations of the 1612-16 Fettmilch Uprising in Frankfurt am Main. The local populace attacked the Jews as representatives of patrician economic and political interests. In 1614 the ghetto was attacked and the Jews driven out. They were readmitted after the fall of the leader, Vincenz Fettmilch the Jews then celebrated a "Vinz-Purim". Contemporaries saw the revolt as an illegitimate attack on authority. 19th-century socialists and liberals viewed Fettmilch as a hero of the popular struggle, while Jewish historians described the Uprising as a typical pogrom. During the Nazi period, German historians and writers praised the 17th-century attempt to make the city "judenrein".
