Both theologians believed that the Jews were eternally cursed, but Luther said it was because of their refusal of Jesus while Eck said it was because they were guilty of deicide. Both of them denied that the Jews were the Chosen People. They condemned Jewish law, but for different reasons. Eck called for anti-Jewish legislation and cancellation of their privileges, but Luther called for burning Jewish homes and synagogues, confiscation of their money and, eventually, expulsion. Concludes that the Reformation did not end the persecution of Jews, as some had hoped it would.
