תקציר/הערה Describes the change which occurred from the beginning of the 16th century in the portrayal of Jews in art works (woodcuts and etchings) and in travelers' accounts, from the stereotypical medieval image to a more realistic and "objective" image. Gives examples from the early 16th century in Germany (e.g. in a book by Johannes Pfefferkorn published in 1508) which retain criticism of Judaism, and were drawn with anti-Jewish intent, but the figures are not stereotypical. Yet throughout the rest of that century the old images prevailed, and they in fact persisted up to the modern period. Examines, though, how the new and different images developed in the 17th-18th centuries in Holland, Italy, and Germany, influenced also by the Jews' own changing image of themselves and their desire to portray their lives and rituals. Points out that even with this new openness, the Gentiles' desire to influence the Jews to convert to Christianity was quite prevalent.
