The desecration of the Carpentras Jewish cemetery on 10 May 1990 not merely resonates of the Vichy regime, but expresses the latest form of a persistent antisemitism in France. Although low-key at times, such as during the years following World War II, antisemitism and racism have been on the rise in France throughout the 1980s. Discusses neo-Nazi acts of hostility toward Jews, Holocaust revisionism, and the contribution of Le Pen and the Front National to the resurgence of a neo-Nazi ideology supported by approximately 15% of the French electorate. In 1990 the French government introduced new legislation to toughen penalties against racial discrimination.
