Analyzes this expulsion through a reexamination of sources, mainly Josephus, Tacitus, and Suetonius, raising the questions who was expelled and why. Concludes that the entire Jewish community (including proselytes), ca. 40,000, was expelled. Regarding the reason, disagrees with previous hypotheses which argued that the Jews were expelled on general moral grounds, or because of Jewish success in proselytizing, or because of Jewish criminality. Based on the socioeconomic situation of the Jews, characterized by their poverty and the tense and turbulent time, and exacerbated by natural disasters, concludes that the reason for the expulsion lay in their participation in the social unrest, and in their designation by Tiberius as a potentially seditious group.
