Surveys the political views of Fritz Roessler, whose father founded the German chemical firm Degussa. Originally a liberal, Roessler became disgusted with party politics and social and economic polarization in the 1920s and moved to the right. His attitude towards Nazism was ambivalent. At first he considered its program confused and its members disreputable or insignificant. After 1933, he admired the government's achievements. However, he did not join the party while believing Jewish influence should be restrained, he could not identify with Nazi racism or totalitarianism. He tried to protect individual Jewish associates, but acquiesced in Aryanization measures. He recognized the futility of these compromises before his death in 1937. Notes that the Nazi regime helped Degussa by discouraging imports and by Aryanization.
