האינטרנט (בעברית: מִרְשֶׁתֶת) הוא רשת תקשורת נתונים בהיקף כמעט כלל־עולמי שנוצרה כתוצאה מחיבורים רבים בין רשתות מחשבים שאפשרו תקשורת בין מחשבים רבים ברשתות רבות. התשתית הרעיונית והמחקרית של האינטרנט נמצאת בתחילת שנות ה-60 במסגרת מחקרים של הסוכנות הצבאית לפרויקטים מחקריים מתקדמים של משרד ההגנה האמריקאי (ARPA). תחילת פעילותו של האינטרנט, כלומר הרשת המבצעית הראשונה (ARPANET), החלה בסוף שנות ה-60, כאשר בשנת 1969 נשלחה ההודעה הראשונה בין שני מחשבים מחוברים. היקף רשת האינטרנט, כמות המידע העצומה השמורה בשרתים והפעילות הרבה שמבוצעת באמצעות האינטרנט הפכו את האינטרנט לגורם רב משמעות בהתפתחות הכלכלית, החברתית והתרבותית.
