This impressive picture collection was donated to the Shoshana and Asher Halevy Picture Archives in Yad Ben-Zvi by Channah Lazrus-Yaffe, the widow of Emanuel. It contains many pictures of Israel from the beginning of the 1900's, primarily between the years 1920-1935. This collection, mostly preserved on glass boards, includes photographs from the cities: Haifa, Tel-Aviv, Tiberias, Zefat and the pioneering settlements of the Jezreel Valley. In addition there are photographs from other Middle Eastern countries: Lebanon, Syria, Egypt (today southern Sudan), Greece and Cypress. It is possible that these photographs accompanied his lectures while he was teaching in Israel and abroad as an emissary of the Education Department of the Jewish Agency. Emanuel Yaffe and Chava Lazarus Emanuel Yaffe was born in 1911 in Kaunas (Kovno), Lithuania, the son of Yitzchak and Bilah (nee Silman) Yaffe, brother to Amikam and Aviad. In 1913, when he was two years old, he came to Israel with his family. His early years were spent growing up in Rehovot. His family moved to Jerusalem and he completed high school at the Gymanasia Rehavia. He later studied at the Teacher's Seminary in Beit Hakerem and at the Hebrew University, where he received his degree in Education and Psychology. He took courses at London University and Harvard (1965). During the British Mandate he was active in the Scouts Movement and edited their journal. His professional career, starting in 1931, was in the field of education – teaching, as a principal and as a supervisor. He started working in the Re'ali Elementary School in Haifa. During his career he directed the elementary grades of this school. He served as a pedagogical instructor at the Teachers' Seminary at the Reali School, a teacher and deputy director at the Haifa Teachers' Seminary, supervising the teachers' colleges and assistant director of the teacher training department at the Ministry of Education and Culture. In 1960, he was appointed head of the Department of Teacher Training and after about ten years was appointed Director of the Teacher Training and Training Division and Deputy Director-General of the Ministry. In 1977, Emanuel Yaffe was appointed Chairman of the Pedagogical Secretariat for the Education System, a position he held until his death. He married Chava Lazarus, who was born in Wiesbaden, Germany in 1954. She was a professor of Islamic Religion at the Hebrew University. She received the Israel Prize for History in 1993. The couple had two children: Yishai and Orit. Emanuel Yaffe liked music. He composed melodies. He also published children's books, books for math teachers, articles on teacher training, education and educational administration as well as on elementary education. Emanuel Yaffe passed away in 1978 at the age of 66. A collection of his letters was published in a book by Dr. Chaim Ormian, in the educational journal of the Ministry of Culture and Education in October 1979.
