Joya (Margalit) Bibas, nee Molcho, the daughter of Shmuel and Perla (nee Bar-Shalom), whose roots were from Saloniki, Greece, was born in 1880 in the Old City of Jerusalem. Her parents were in Israel for 5 generations. (According to the genealogy of the family, they are descendents of the Benbenisti and Abarbanel famlies from Spain, who left for Saloniki, just two years before the expulsion of the Jews.) In approximately 1905 Joya married Shlomo Bibas. They moved from the Old City and settled in the Ohel Moshe neighborhood. In 1910 the family moved to Egypt, with their small daughter, Aliza. They lived there for 8 years. Two children were born there- Shmuel and David. Upon their return to Israel they lived in Ohel Moshe until 1938.There they had 5 more children. They then moved to Mahane Yehuda and lived in the "Casino de Paris" building. After the marriage of the oldest daughter, Aliza with Yitzchak Molcho, they and their 4 children moved into that apartment as well. It was 4 rooms, which was large for those days. The whole family lived there together, harmoniously. Shlomo Bibas, Joya's husband, was born in Israel in 1883, to Shlomo Bibas and Leah Arditi. The first member of the family who immigrated to Israel was Rav Shmuel Bibas, in 1832. He settled in Hebron. He died in 1854 at the age of 71. As the years passed, Shlomo and Joya's children got married, as did the children of Aliza and Yizchak Molcho. (Yitzchak died in 1967). Thus Joya and her daughter Aliza continued to live together in the apartment in the "Casino de Pairs" building. After Aliza's death in 1976 Joya was left alone in the apartment and therefore decided to move to an old-age home in San Simon, Jerusalem. She lived till the ripe old age of 105! She was privileged to see children of her great-grandchildren. The family lived there during the British occupation, the curfew in the city streets, the Arab pogroms, the celebrations upon the Declaration of Independence, the shelling of Jerusalem, breaking the siege on Jerusalem and the trucks filled with food rolling into the city.
