Lucy (Hasiba) Moussaly was born in 1936 in Damascus, Syria. Her parents were Fuad (Rahamim), born in Damascus in 1912, and Mari (Miriam) nee Falah, born in Damascus in 1914. The origin of the family is from Iraq. Lucy is the oldest sister of Huguette (1938), Andre (Ovadia 1944 named after his grandfather) and Elazar (Ezer 1946). Fuad (Rahamim) Moussaly studied in the Alliance school. He was a business man and a store owner. The store was located in an upscale neighborhood 'Mahmudia' in Damascus, a neighborhood where many Jews lived. The family moved to Beirut, Lebanon where he ran a factory for producing textiles along with his brother, David. Mari (Miriam) nee Falah was a housekeeper. She studied at the Alliance school in her youth and even met Rachel Yanait Ben-Zvi who excited the younger generation with her stories and urged them to move to the Land of Israel. The family led a traditional Jewish life. They were well off financially. The dominant culture in their lifestyle was the French culture. When Lucy was nine years old the Second World War broke out. Lucy remembers the sirens and running down into the shelters in Damascus. In 1946, after receiving independence and the departure of the French, anti-Semitic riots broke out which caused great harm to the Jewish community in Syria. After the adoption of the UN resolution of November 29th, 1947, the United Nations Partition Plan for Palestine, the Jews were deprived of basic rights and riots broke out against the Jews in Haleb and Damascus. The Alliance Schools stopped functioning in Syria and many of the Jews from Damascus left and moved to other countries. After the riots in 1946, when Lucy was 10 years old, the Moussaly family moved to the Wadi Abu Jemal neighborhood in Beirut, Lebanon. The grandmother, Lale Falah (Mari's mother) and her daughter Alegra joined them. The Moussaly family, as did other wealthy families, had a summer home in the mountain village of Bhamdoun, where they spent the hot summer months. Lucy studied in the Alliance School until age 16. Afterwards she studied at the American School for Girls, where she learned English. Jews and non-Jews studied there together. At the age of 18 she was engaged to Albert (Avraham) Eliya, a successful lawyer from Beirut, who worked in the bank of Yaakov Safra (the father of Edmond Safra). Albert continued his studies and received a Doctorate in Law and was a member of the Lebanese Legal Association. The engagement took place on 1/5/1954. Lucy continued her studies until the wedding. The traditional Jewish wedding celebrations went on for one week before the wedding at the home of the bride and for another week after the wedding at the home of the groom. The wedding took place on September 19th, 1954 in the Great Synagogue in Bhamdoun. The Chief Rabbi, Lichtman, who came from Israel, performed the wedding ceremony. (The Jewish community requested that the Rabbi come and live there to serve as their rabbi, and help them with issues of Jewish law). There was a local Rabbi in the community, Rabbi Bron and Chacham Yaakov Attia who was the Mohel and later moved to Israel and became the Chief Rabbi of Bat-Yam. Lucy and Albert had 5 children: Elza (1955, later Sharlo); Miriam (1957, later Tresner); Daniela (1958, later Deutch); Moshe (Musa 1962, married Emrel Habib) and Freddy (1965, married Dafna Ozry). Lucy's parents, Fuad and Mari Moussaly immigrated to Mexico in 1958. Albert (Avraham) Eliya was born in 1920 in Beirut. Lebanon. His parents were Moshe (Musa) Eliya (1896-1956) and Liza (1905-1967). He was the younger brother of Michel (1912); Lucy-Lala (1915); Regine (1916) and David (1917). The father, a descendant of a family who lived for many generations in Damascus, was an accountant. Liza, the mother, whose family originated in Turkey, was a house-wife. Albert (Avraham) studied at the Alliance school in his youth. His seriousness enabled him to be accepted to study law and to excel in it. In 1958 a war broke out in Lebanon between the Moslems and the Maronites. Albert went to his brother Michel in Mexico to help in the business. Lucy, his wife, stayed at home in Beirut with their three daughters, Elza, Miriam and Daniela. Albert and Lucy moved to Israel in 1964 together with their extended family, which included their paternal grandparents and brothers-in-law. The family sent their belongings on a Zim ship from Greece and they flew to Israel from there. David Eliya and his wife met the family upon their arrival at the airport. The family settled at first in Ramat Aviv in Tel Aviv. One year later they moved to Herziliya. Albert, who was a lawyer in Beirut, passed the bar exam in Israel so as to be able to practice here. He met Prof. Avner Shaki (who later was appointed Minister of Religion) at the Faculty of Law at Tel-Aviv University. He helped him get started. In 1967 Albert opened a law office on Yehuda Halevi Street in Tel-Aviv. He dealt mostly with French law as opposed to Israeli law. He wrote three law books. Lucy and Albert moved to the Ramat Sharett neighborhood in Jerusalem in the year 2000. On their 50th anniversary they donated a torah scroll to the "Zechut Avot" Synagogue in their neighborhood. Albert passed away in Jerusalem in 2011 at the age of 91. Lucy continued to live (2019) in their home in Jerusalem. This photo collection gives us insight into the daily life of the Jewish community of Damascus and Beirut, the summer vacation spot in Bhamdoun, the engagement and marriage ceremonies, family and personal pictures etc. The following is a link to an interview with Lucy Eliya as part of the project, "To See the Voices" of Yad Ben-Zvi : https://www.seeingthevoices.com/skn/c82/%D7%A8%D7%95%D7%90%D7%99% The following is a link to a movie on Avraham Eliya- "Dr. of Law from Beirut to Jerusalem- A Story of Aliyah": : https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Tj8ZOlkZaRM
