Dr. Bernard Marx Weinstein was born in Nashville, Tennessee in the USA on September 27th, 1906. His parents were Joseph Weinstein and Gertrude nee Barker. Bernard studied in Peabody College. He completed his medical studies at Vanderbilt University in 1932. He then went on to do an internship in surgery at the Vanderbilt University Hospital which he completed in 1936. Upon completion of his medical studies, he opened a private practice in Nashville. Simultaneously he maintained a position on the staff as a Professor of clinical surgery in the Vanderbilt University Hospital until his death on August 27th, 1967. In 1931Bernard married Ida Jewell Ehrenberg (born on 13.2.1907). Ida completed her BA in art at Chicago University, however she did not work in her field, but spent her life as a housewife. The couple had 3 children: two boys, Bernard (1936) and Gilbert (born in 1944 and made aliyah in 1972), and one daughter, Ellen (1940). Ida Jewell passed away on 15.10.2004. In addition to his professional activities, Dr. Weinstein was involved in various philanthropic projects; the Nashville Symphony Orchestra and the Vanderbilt University Mandolin Orchestra. He also served as the President of the reform synagogue, Ohavei Shalom and was a member of the conservative community, "Shearit Yisrael". Bernard was a Zionist and was involved in the local political scene. In 1964, Dr. Weinstein and his wife, Ida, toured the State of Israel together with their friends from Nashville, Sydney Cohn and his wife, Dorothy (more details about Sydney Kohn's work can be found below). Their guide during the trip, which lasted about 10 days was Shalom Aferman. The tour included visiting the countries main cities: Tel Aviv-Jaffa, Haifa and Jerusalem; secondary cities: Nazareth, Tiberias, Safed and Acre; archaeological sites: Caesarea, Beit She'arim, Capernaum and Ashkelon, Upper Nazareth; the kibbutzim - Degania Aleph, Kfar Silver and the border crossing with Egypt in the Gaza Strip. Dr. Weinstein photographed the trip. A selection of the colored slides is displayed in the accompanying album. An expression of the photographer's enthusiasm for the construction boom and the architectural innovations in the many public buildings he met throughout the country is evident in the number of pictures of these types of sites. Among the buildings he photographed are those whose construction was completed at the end of the 1950's and the beginning of the '60's: Habima Theater, Mann Auditorium, Helena Rubinstein Pavilion, the Histadrut Executive Committee Building, Ichilov Hospital and the El Al Building in Tel Aviv, the Churchill Auditorium at the Technion in Haifa; the Supersol Building, the Government Compound and the buildings of the Hebrew University of Jerusalem. In addition he photographed public buildings, which were under construction during the trip, but in the years that followed they became iconic structures: the Shalom Meir Tower in Tel Aviv and the Israel Museum including the Dome of the Book, in Jerusalem. In 1929, Sidney Cohen and his father Jessel opened a factory for producing shoes, in Chicago, USA. They later moved to Clarksville, Tenn. where they opened a large factory for the production of children's shoes. However, after they learnt how to produce cowboy boots, that until then were handmade and very costly, they converted their factory to producing cowboy boots. The industrial production of these boots lowered their cost considerably and provided a good profit for the business. Sources: Dr. B.M.
