The origin of the Geneo (Chenileo) Family is from the Aragon region in Spain. The family members were from the highest echelons of the administration in the government. After the expulsion from Spain (1492) they wandered around Europe and settled in Salonika, Greece. Hachacham Yaakov Geneo, one of the descendants of the family (born in 1798) founded the "Beit Yaakov Yeshiva" in Salonika, and taught there. In 1854, at the age of 55 he and his family, out of a craving to return to Zion, moved to Israel and settled in the Old City in Jerusalem. He served as a rabbi in Jerusalem and Hevron until his death in 1875 at the age of 77. The family ran a liquor store on Hayehudim Street which was situated on the bottom floor of the Amdorski Hotel in the Old City in Jerusalem. Bechor Shalom Geneo, the son of Chacham Yaacov Shalom (born in 1815) established a winery. Another son, Chezkiyah David (1848-1916) expanded the winery. There are those who say that Chezkiyah David learned the secret of preparing arak from Harav Ben Zion Cuenca. Their mother helped run and develop the winery. Bechor Shalom Geneo (1868-1947) married Tamar Yehoshua, the daughter of Rabbi Shabtai Yehoshua Gavriel (1847-1910), who was the head of the Sephardic Beit Din and his wife Bolisa nee Sporta. Bechor Shalom and Tamar had 8 children: Meir Chai Geneo (married Esther, the daughter of Rabbi Chanina Gavriel, the brother of his mother Tamar); Yaakov (married Miriam Geneo, his cousin, and served in the Turkish army until General Allenby entered Israel with his army); Vida (married Yosef Taragon, and passed away at a young age in Egypt); Rivka (married Dr.Eliyahu Peretz); Shmuel; Esther (married Avraham Broch born in 1914, Turkey); Lisa ( married Nissim Sasson) and Chezkiya David (the twin brother of Esther). After the 1929 Arab riots in Palestine the Geneo family moved to Yemin Moshe. Later they moved to Nachalat Shiva, where they lived until 1957. During the 1936-1939 Arab revolt in Palestine the family opened a wine store on Yafo Street. There are still remnants of the winery in the Nachlat Shiva neighborhood and there is a sign with the family insignia that tells the family history. There were more marital connections between the Geneo and the Yehoshua families. The brother of Tamar Yehoshua Geneo, Rabbi Chananya Gavriel Yehoshua, married Rachel the daughter of Rabbi Moshe Ayash (the grand-daughter of Rabbi Yitzchak Prague-Oplatka). Their children: Bokas, who married Chaim Hadaya; Esther, who married the lawyer Meir Geneo, her cousin (and who became the parents of Prof. Penina Morag Telman); Fortuna, the wife of David Yehoshua and Chasdai Amira Margalit, the wife of Yosef Chayun; Yaakov (1905-1982) who was an author and the father of A.B. Yehoshua, married Malka Sultana Rozoleo; Gavriel who married Bella. The picture album was brought to the archives at Yad Ben-Zvi through the project of the Lev Ha'ir Community Center.
