Shaul Serry was born in 1928 son to Haim Serry (1879) and Shama (1900-1975), born in Yemen. Professor Serry was the Head of the Department of Jewelry Making at the Bezalel Art Academy and one of the pillars of this profession in Israel. Haim Serry, the father of Shaul came to Israel in 1882 with the 'Aaleh B'Taiman' Project (a program to bring the Jews from Yemen to the Land of Israel in 1881 during the First Aliyah). He lived in Nachalat Zion in Jerusalem and was a milkman by profession. He passed away in 1962. Shama, Shaul's mother, came to Israel in 1906, via Egypt, together with her family, when she was 6 years old. She studied at Evelina de Rothschild for two years, however due to financial difficulties the family moved to Egypt. Shama married and gave birth to her eldest son, however her husband died young and she re-married, as the third wife of Haim Serry. Shaul Serry studied at the Bezalel Art Academy between the years 1947-1951. At that time the department was called 'Metal Works'. He worked as a teacher and lecturer between the years 1955-2002. By then the department was called, 'Department for Jewelry Making and Fashion'. He served as Head of the Department along with the artist Zelig Segal, between the years 1964-1968. Throughout the years he exhibited his works in Israel and abroad. In 1964 he designed a gold medallion which had a map of Israel on it and under the map the words, in Hebrew and Latin, "Made the Pilgrimage to the Holy Land". This coin was a gift from the Israeli Government to Pope Paulus VI during his visit to Israel. Shaul Serry passed away in December 2014.
