This collection is an additional part of the photographic archives of Yitzchak and Rachel Yanait Ben-Zvi which gives us a look into the professional and public life of Yitzchak Ben-Zvi before he became President of the State of Israel. Starting from 1931 Yitzchak Ben-Zvi was elected to the position of Chairman of the Directorate of the National Council and the Head of the Political Department. He served in these positions until 1944. During WWII he participated in the Round Table Conference in London (1939) and worked to boost the draft to the British army. (1941). In 1943 he served as a member of the Committee for Occupied European Jewry (the Rescue Committee). He visited Turkey as part of the attempts to save European Jewry. In 1944 he was elected as President of the Jewish National Council after the elections to the Fourth Assembly of Representatives. In 1945 he participated in the World Zionist Conference in London. In 1946 he testified before the Anglo-American Commission of Inquiry that took place in the YMCA building in Jerusalem. After the arrest of the leaders of the Yishuv by the British on the "Black Sabbath", he headed the protests. The Committee was charged with the job of suggesting a viable solution to the problem of Eretz Yisrael and the displaced Jews in Europe. (Pictures from this meeting are in this collection). Throughout the years Yitzchak Ben-Zvi took part in composing chapters of the history of Eretz Yisrael in official publications and in reports to international groups. Among other things, he founded the "Research Institute for Eastern Jewry" in 1947. Later, in 1949, the Institute sent him to visit the immigration camps in Eden, Yemen. He also travelled to the United States and Canada for the Jewish Agency. In this photographic collection there are pictures from his many journeys to visit American Jewry. In 1948 he was appointed as a member of the Jerusalem Committee for Managing Civil Life. With the declaration of the founding of the State of Israel in 1948, Ben-Zvi was one of the signers of the Declaration of Independence. In the years 1949-1952 he served as a member of the Knesset from the Eretz Yisrael Worker's Party and from 1952 until his death in 1963 he served as the second President of the State of Israel. The collection includes a series of 21 New Year's greeting cards that were published by the IDF for the first New Years of the New State of Israel (1949).
