وصف المحتوى

Yisrael Manshenfreund was born on November 18th, 1903 in Dalton in the Kolomia District in Galicia to Chana and David, brother to Moshe, Yitzchak, Yaacov, Sima and Peppi. In 1914, with the outbreak of WWI, when he was 11 years old, his family escaped to the Czech Republic. In his youth he moved to Vienna, the capital of the Austria-Hungarian Empire. In Austria he learned to be a master watchmaker. As a Zionist, Yisael joined the Hachalutz Movement. As a lover of nature, he joined nature clubs. He met Shoshana Petrenker and they married on September 30, 1930. Their eldest daughter, Yaffa, was born on December 17, 1934. In 1938 Shoshana came for a family visit to Israel with their daughter. Shoshana's family, her parents and sisters, were the original settlers of the Neve Sha'nan neighborhood in Haifa. Shoshana attempted to get permission for Yisrael to come to Israel (certificate). The notice of receipt of the certificate that Shoshana received from the Mandate Government was dated November 4th, 1938, just 4 days before Kristallnacht. Yisrael was arrested on Kristallnacht but was not transported and it seems that a few days afterwards he received permission to come to the Land of Israel and immediately left Vienna. Yisrael came to the Land of Israel and lived with his family in Haifa. He opened a store for watches and jewelry on 21 Hachalutz Street in Hadar Carmel. Their son Yaacov (Menchi) was born on October 30, 1941 and in 1951 their daughter Chedva was born. Yisrael was one of the founders of the branch of the Nature Lovers of Hapoel Haifa. Members of the group took hiking trips every Saturday throughout the country for years (the group still exists today). Before 1948 they also travelled to the neighboring countries. He hiked with the group his whole life, sometimes he led the group. His store on Hachalutz Street functioned as the "Secretariat" of the group. That was where the members signed up for the activities. They also travelled abroad as a group. (The Haifa group had a corresponding group in Zurich, Switzerland. The relationship included mutual visits including staying in the other members' homes.) Yisrael Manshenfreund passed away on March 31, 1992. Shoshana Manshenfreund nee Petrenker was born in December 1910 to Zalman and Bracha Petrenker, sister to Feivel, Sofi, Henya, Rachel, Yitzchak, Yehudit, Shulamit and Chaim in Vienna (then the capital of the Austria-Hungarian Empire). Her family moved to the Czech Republic during the period of WWI. In her youth she studied to be a kindergarten teacher. Her parents moved to Israel in 1933 and she came to visit her family in 1938. After Austria was annexed to Nazi Germany, the 'anschluss', she remained in Israel. She worked together with her husband in their store and together they hiked with the Nature Lover's Group. Shoshana passed away on April 21, 1992, three weeks after her husband died. The collection was given to the archives by their daughter Chedva Admon.
