Rachel (Rika) nee Levitan was born in Jerusalem in 1928. Her parents were Yosef Zechariah and Chaya nee Tebechnik (1908-1988). Her maternal grandparents were Kalman Tebechnik (1872) and Chava Berdichevsky. The Tebchenik Family was a large family with many children (Chaya, Mina, Manya, Izchak, Shifra and Naomi). The family moved to Israel from Odessa in 1920 after pogroms against the Jews. They settled in Jerusalem. They later moved to Tel Aviv and the grandfather, Kalman, managed the Eshel Hotel in the city. Chaya Tebechnik and Yosef Zecharia Levitan married in 1927. Yosef was born in 1905, came to Israel from Lithuania and was a member of the Shomer Organization. The couple lived with Chaya's parents in the Eshel Hotel in Tel Aviv. They had 3 children. After Rachel (Rika) Levitan's birth, her father, Yosef, was sent on a mission to South Africa, to sell land in Israel to people there. At first he travelled by himself, returning home on vacations. However, later on his family joined him there. In 1940, when Rachel was 12 years old, the family immigrated to South Africa. In March 1947, when Rachel was 19 years old, she and her mother Chaya nee Tebechnik came to Israel to visit family. Rachel joined a six month course to train youth counselors from abroad which was funded by an American organization. At the end of the course Rachel visited her aunt who lived in Jerusalem and left the city with one of the last convoys that departed before the beginning of the siege. At the beginning of 1948 Rachel and her mother sailed from the Haifa port to visit family in the United States. Upon her return to South Africa Rachel Levitan married Walter Hatschul (1951) a descendant of an old Sephardic family. They had three children. They moved to Israel in 1998. In 2003 they moved to 'Poteah B'kfar', a senior's housing village in Tel Mond in the Sharon. This album includes photographs from the period in which Rachel visited Israel (1947) and took part in a course to train youth counselors from abroad. There are also personal pictures of the Tebechnik and Levitan families. Some of the pictures were taken by Yosef Levitan and others by Rachel. Photographs of structures and unique buildings in Tel Aviv, photographed by Yosef Levitan, can be found in the album 5000.0529 in the Tel-Aviv's Israel Revealed to the Eye'.
