Pnina was born in 1927 in Moshav Nahalal. Her parents were Yosef (Kotler) Dromi and Tziporra nee Ostrovski. She had one brother Menahem (1921) and one sister Rivka (1923). She was raised and educated in Nahalal in the Jezreel Valley. She completed her high school studies in the agricultural high school in the village. She learned to be a kindergarten teacher in the Teacher's Seminary in Tel Aviv and augmented her studies at the Seminar in Givat Hashlosha. On Purim, on the 25th of March 1948, she was supposed to marry her fiancée, Ali Ben-Zvi, the son of Rachel Yanait and Yitzchak Ben Zvi (later the second President of the State of Israel). However on March 16th Ali, along with six of his friends, was killed by a gang of Arabs in the fields of Kibbutz Beit Keshet. The tragic love story of Pnina and Ali Ben-Zvi was later turned into a monodrama which she wrote and produces called, "The Israeli Love Story" (2008) Eight years later, in 2015, Pnina Gary published an autobiographical novel that was inspired by the play. Two years later, inspired by the play and the book, a movie came out with the same name, based upon the script of Dita Gary starring Adi Bilski and Aviv Alush. At the end of September 1948, a few months after the tragedy that befell her, Pnina travelled, with a delegation of teachers, to the Displaced Persons Camps in Germany (Munich and Stuttgart) to teach Hebrew to the children. In Germany she met and married Robert (Bob) Gary, a Jewish American journalist. They came back to Israel and settled in Jerusalem. Later they moved to Tel-Aviv. They had two daughters: Dorit and Meirav. Between the years 1951-1953 she wrote a weekly column for the "Dvar Hashavua". In 1953 she and her family moved to New York for four years. During these years she studied acting in the private acting school of Herbert Barghof and Lee Strausberg. In 1957 they returned to Israel and lived in Tel Aviv. When she returned she acted in many plays: "Marius" at the Camari Theater and the Zuta Theater. She, together with Shmuel Atzmon and Omer and Navah Sha'anan, founded the 'Zavit Theater' that functioned for nine years as a travelling theater. The repertoire of the theater was both innovative and value oriented. From 1961 to 1968, she also played in the Haifa and Habima Theater. She even initiated the creation of a workshop for an original play in a basement called "B'martafe" which she ran for three years. In the 1980s, she volunteered to give drama workshops to women at the Neve Tirza Women's Prison and was a member of the management of the Acre Festival. During the 1990's she served as the artistic director at the Orna Porat Children's Theater, Be'er Sheva and Beit Lessin. During the beginning of the 21st century she continued to adapt plays and in 2006 she won the Lifetime Achievement Award for her years of work as artistic director of theater for children and youth. The photographs in this album include pictures of her childhood in Nahalal, pictures of her and her fiancée, Ali Ben Zvi, (the son of Rachel Yanait and Yitzhak Ben Zviwho was killed a few days before their wedding) pictures of her travels to the Displaced Persons Camp in Germany after the war, her meeting with her future husband Robert (Bob) Gaty and pictures from her professional career as an actress and producer. Yosef Dromi (Kotler) and his Wife Tzippora nee Ostrovski- The Parents of Pnina Yosef was born in august 1888 in the Podolia region on the Romanian- Ukraine border. His parents were Yechezkel Kotler and Ita. He was a Zionist and a patriot in his youth and in 1903 he wrote a manifesto in Russian and Hebrew that explained Herzl's vision. He joined the Russian army and served for 8 years, four of which were in mandatory service. He wanted to prove that Jews weren't cowards. Due to the outbreak of WWI he had to continue serving for an additional four years. He married Tzippora Dromi nee Ostrovski, born in 1894 in Russia, the daughter of Menachem and Rivka. On December 19, 1919 he made aliyah to Israel as a pioneer, along with his wife, after having undergone pioneer training in Russia. They, along with other pioneers came on the boat 'Rosalyn'. While on the boat he changed his family name to Dromi. Tzippora's brother Shimon and his wife Yafa were also on the boat. They pretended to be the children of Yosef and Tzippora. The group of pioneers that arrived at the Jafa port under the direction of the agronomist, Zusman, was sent to Hevron to establish a nursery of forest trees in order to plant trees in the hills of Jerusalem. When the group fell apart, the members were sent to found Kibbutz Kiryat Anavim. When Yosef heard about the establishment of the first Hebrew moshav, he set out on a cart to Givat Shimron in the Jezreel Valley and joined the tent camp of the founders, above the swamps that were later became Nahalal. In 1921 when their eldest don Menachem was born (he was born in Hevron) the family moved to Nahalal. Each family in Nahalal received the same 'tools' for working the land, a parcel of land, water a cow and a horse, as well as materials to build a hut for the family. The hut consisted of two rooms and an outside bathroom. In the landscaped yard of the family there were fruit trees: guavas, figs strawberries and loquats. Tzippora was proud of the rose bushes she grew and cared for. Yosef and Tzippora had two daughters: Rivka later Sami (1923) and Pnina later Gary (1927). Yosef passed away in 1970 and Tzippora died in 1979. They are both buried in the cemetery in Nahala. اقرأ أكثر
