Tachmuni', the boy's school in Jerusalem near Hanevi'im Street was founded in 1909. Twenty years later it moved to the Mekor Baruch neighborhood. It was founded by a group of educated religious parents who wished to provide their children with an education that combined religious values, modern science and Zionism. It was based on the principle of 'Torah and Derech Eretz'. Thousands of children studied at the Tachmuni School and it was a focal point for the Religious Zionist Movement and the Poel Hamizrachi Movement in Jerusalem. The students and staff were part of the traditional and religious population and the institution prided itself on religious and social tolerance. Moshe Ilan, the son of the teacher Aryeh Ilan, gave these pictures to the Yad Ben-Zvi Archives. The album includes photographs of school activities from the beginning of the 1900's. There are also personal pictures as well as pictures of various sites in Israel. Some of the photographs are those that were printed on calendars of the Keren Hayesod, photographs that were taken by some of the best photographers of the time: Naftali Openheim, Tim (Nahum) Gidel, Edgar Hirshbein, Rudi Visenstein, Avraham Melbeski, Zolton Kluger and others. The photographs are from the 1940's - 1950's.
