Naomi Polani, actress, director, music producer and choreographer, 2019 Israel Prize winner in the field of theater and dance, was born in Tel Aviv in 1927. Polani is known as "the mother of the IDF bands," and as the founder and director of the musical ensembles "HaTarnegolim" and "Hamtsitsim." Polani collected and preserved her archive, covering 1932 to 2010, throughout her career, beginning with the War of Independence as the star and founding member of the Palmach entertainment troupe, and the "Chizbatron" troupe; through her appointment in the 1950s as director of the military bands - the Northern Command Troupe, the Armored Corps Band and the "Lahakat HaNahal" (The Nahal Entertainment Troupe), - which were in their infancy at the time; the 1960s, founding "HaTarnegolim," (composed of eight veterans of army entertainment troupes), and the "Hamtsitsim," culminating in the period between the 1970s to the 1990s, during which time she engaged in teaching and directing shows, in particular at the Jordan Valley agricultural settlements. Archival materials include sheet music, photographs, personal and professional lists, films, letters, and ephemera relating to the troupes she founded, the many shows she was involved in and the creators and cultural figures with which she worked. The archive also includes works that were not performed and drafts of directing instructions and adaptations of texts, along with documentation of all Polani's performances, mainly texts and scores.
