It was surrounded by high walls with a fortified gateway, in order to separate the Muslim and Jewish populations. The Mellah of Fes was established in 1438 and is considered as one of the oldest Jewish quarters of Morocco. At this time of fanaticism, encouraged by the Almohad dynasty, the sultan who wanted to protect the Jewish populations of the city, ordered for them the construction of a Jewish quarter in Fes-el-Jedid, next to the royal palace.
